Biography

Jerry Anthony is an Associate Professor in the School of Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Iowa, working with our university since the completion of his Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida State University in 2000. Dr. Anthony holds credentials as an architect, a physical planner for towns and nations, and a policy planner, whose research focuses on land use planning, housing policy, and growth management. Dr. Anthony co-founded the Housing Trust Fund of Johnson County, a nonprofit to create more affordable housing development in Johnson County, Iowa, which, since 2004, has disbursed over $13 million that has helped build over 1,200 reasonably priced housing units. In 2012, he co-founded the World Institute of Sustainable Habitats (WISH) in Kochi, India, to expand developing countries’ knowledge and usage of sustainable urban development practices. Dr. Anthony has won a multitude of awards from various national, state, and local entities, such as the Fulbright Climate Scholar Award in 2022 and Iowa City's Linda Severson Human Rights Award in 2023. In 2020, he was inducted into the American Institute of Certified Planners' College of Fellows by the American Planning Association, the greatest honor for urban planners in the U.S.; he is currently the only planner in the state of Iowa with this honor.
